The final day of York's is upon us & its a chance for the older stayers to shine in the Yorkshire Cup, ground is drying out all the time as Britain is bathed in some glorious weather which is a worry for recent runaway Ascot winner Tac De Boistron as he bids to follow up, be aware that the ground at Ascot was described by his trainer as the fastest he would want to run him on.
This is more competitive than Ascot's Sagaro as he faces some improving horses tomorrow but as long as the ground remains no better than good to soft he will be a force even under his penalty, these early season Cup races are his big aims as touchwood come Ascot next month the ground will be faster & he will not be running in a Gold Cup on faster ground.
The filly Seal Of Approval faces an uphill task conceding weight to the boys on her first start against them & is readily passed over, she needs to improve again to show that last year's shock Group 1 win was no fluke.
With the ground continuing to dry Ahzeemah's chances are enhanced, he has only finished outside the first 4 once in 19 starts & that was his last run at the end of last season on bottomless ground in The Long Distance Cup, he has been working well in the build up to this & can go close.
Biographer is best watched for the time being, he has shown little upped to this grade on his last half a dozen starts & in truth has disappointed me as I thought he would be a top class stayer. I doubt he will run if the ground continues to dry out.
Camborne improved at the end of last season winning the Mallard & a very weak Group 3 at Newbury, he will need to be on his A game first time out upped in grade. Glen's Diamond won this last year after making all & repelling all rivals up the straight, goes well here & this will have been the plan, this year's renewal is a much stronger one though.
Gospel Choir continues to step up in trip this season after gaining his breakthrough pattern success last time, a versatile classy horse who is good form, he will be hard to keep out of the frame.
High Jinx ran a decent race over this trip first time out at Nottingham but showed his flaws once more, he needs a strong pace to aim at over 1m6f as he is a thorough stayer. Penglai Pavillion is now on a recovery mission upped in trip, ground drying out is a worry as he has looked ill at ease on the firmer ground on his last two starts, he looked a horse who should go on improving at 4 last year but now needs to bounce back.
Repeater is a complete rogue who I could not fancy with stolen money.
Tiger Cliff's biggest win can over course & distance in The Ebor, he was expected to go hurdling in the winter but never made the track, still unexposed as a stayer he could have more to offer this year although after an interrupted winter he may need this first run back.
Cubanita remains in grand form as she showed by out battling to now reformed Noble Mission at Newbury, she is respected although has 8 lengths to find with Tac De Boistron on last year's form.
Khione another mare was behind Cubanita at Newbury first time out, she will have improved for that but not enough to be troubling the best of these.
Quality race in which Gospel Choir 5/1 Bet365 / Paddy Power can continue his improved form this season. (WON)
The first 2yo Listed race of the season opens up York's card, they are not races I normally have an opinion on unless a 2yo from my tracker is due to run which is not the case on Friday so I will give it a miss.
The Jorvik Stakes looks at the mercy of Arab Spring from his mark of 96, he won easily on his first handicap start off 85 last time at Doncaster & I cannot see the rise in weights stopping this 'Group horse in a handicap'.
Retirement Plan is another who could end up in pattern company before the seasons out showed nothing on his return at Thirsk, he will need to perform much better here. Chancery will do well to be involved from top weight against younger more promising rivals. Duke Of Clarence ran pretty well in the Chester Cup, drooping back in trip should be ok for him but he looks a few lbs too high in a hot race. Ardlui showed nothing at Ripon & is better over further.
Amralah stayed on up the hill at Newmarket last time, he is still unexposed & is the one most likely to put it up to Arab Spring from the same mark here.
Kashmir Peak is hooded for the first time on his return to the level, his jockey's claim gives him place chances. Media Hype has looked out of sorts for a long time now & faces a tough task as does Saptapadi who hasn't added to his maiden success in 2010 despite shaping well numerous times over the years.
Itlaaq has been competitive from marks in the 90's before so he is still well treated & he won easily at Doncaster last time, place chances. Bute Hall has been running ok recently but has work to do with Itlaaq on latest running & has never been this class before.Gabrial's Star was laid out for his win at Chester last week, he is respected on that but this is a tougher race. On all known form Irish raider Shalaman has quite a lot on in this grade.
Have long been a fan of Arab Spring 6/4 William Hill & he can win this before going up in grade. (WON)
3yo fillies of a certain rating are always hard to place hence why the mile Listed race has attracted a field of 14, Adhwaa comes into this on the back of a tenacious win at Ascot a few weeks ago, her best form is on ground with some cut in it & although she is not very big whoever gets into a battle with her will know about it.
Azagal got back to winning ways last time & steps back up in grade, she is another tough filly but is fairly exposed.
Belle De Lawers caused a 50/1 shock on her debut, she won going away in a race that fell apart, she needs more upped in grade.
Dutch Courage & Dutch Romance come out of The Fred Darling at Newbury both need to improve stepped up in distance which so far looks like it will be too far for them, Lady Lara finished in front of the two Dutch's at Newbury & was then outclassed in the Guineas, she is likely to be one of her trainers final runners after he lost his appeal after being deemed as a person unsuitable to hold a license, he will want to bow out with some money & on form Lady Lara has chances in this so under Kieran don't be surprised if she was to go very close in this.
Folk Melody was the first of many Charlie Appleby runners to run below par so far this season although she was as it it turned out on the wrong side of the track at Newmarket in the end, she should be capable of better here.
Gracie Hart is chasing black type, she will struggle as will Lustrous & Nirva.
Midnite Angel brings some good form to the table but is limited. Pelerin easily won a Thirsk handicap & goes back up in grade, there should be classier fillies than her in this. Qawaasem has some decent minor pattern placed form in the book as a 2yo,granted progression she is one of the better fillies in this race although Dane O'Neil prefers Adhwaa.
Radiator was favourite to beat Miss France in last season's Oh So Sharp in which she finished 4th, previous to that she had won her maiden by 15 lengths, the step up came too quickly for her & she raced on the outside with no cover at Newmarket, that form is the best of these though & she is a big filly who should make a nice 3yo, her trainer won this race with a similar type last year in Pavlosk & will be expected to follow that up this year.
Non betting race for me.
None of the last 3 races on York's card appeal as betting mediums.

Newbury also race on Friday the first day of the two day Lockinge meeting, the feature is another Oaks trial in the shape of The Swettenham Stud Stakes, it has produced 3 Oaks winners since 1971 Circus Plume in 1984, Eswarah in 2005 & Dancing Rain 2011 who was 2nd in this race before winning at Epsom.
Inchila will most likely be favourite due to her comfortable maiden win at Newbury a month ago when she beat Cascading a nice prospect for Hughie Morrison, Criteria who was just touched off in last Saturday's Lingfield Oaks Trial & Nancy From Nairobi. She is bred for stamina & could be an interesting outsider for the Oaks itself if she can win this.
Hadaatha won on her debut at Newmarket's Craven meeting beating Eastern Belle the step up in trip should suit her, her talented trainer is following his mentor's Eswarah route with her, she could as they say be anything,.
Be My Gal broke her maiden in a noncompetitive fillies Listed race at Goodwood a few weeks ago beating older horses, she stayed on all the way up the straight & carries a penalty for that success here. Her maiden that she was 2nd in at Newbury is working out well the winner Bright Approach was 3rd in The Cheshire Oaks while to two horses that finished behind her have both won since.
Grace And Favour ran well for a long way on soft ground at Sandown last time & this is a big step up on her 2nd start, on form lines through Nancy From Nairobi she won't get near Inchila.
One of my 8 to follow for the season heads down the Oaks trial as I had hoped (am on at 80's & 66's at present); Lahinch Classics comes over from David Wachman's stable after an easy win at Dundalk last month, that race was over 11f & she looks a filly who will do better the further she goes. Her debut 3rd in which she moved well for a long way before getting tired looks red hot; the winner My Titania won at Group 3 level next time & is fancied for Irish 1000 Guineas where she will likely re-oppose the 2nd from that Leopardstown maiden Afternoon Sunlight who won a Group 3 at the same venue in comprehensive style last weekend.
Lamar is once again outclassed in the search for black type, Likelihood steps up in trip & class for last year's winning connections, her form is not stacking up so well & this looks a very decent renewal. Sound Reflection another of my Oaks antepost bets returns to the track after fading very badly when she made the running for Taghrooda at Newmarket last time, she is a big filly who will have come on for that & is well thought of.
Volume ran a extremely promising race in what looked a hot handicap at Newmarket last time giving weight to all bar one of her rivals, the winner has since disappointed upped in grade while the 2nd won easily in bad ground at Sandown, she is worth a go in this grade but does face a couple of very nice fillies on Friday.
A second Listed race takes place at the Berkshire venue on Friday, for 3yo's over 6f. It should be between Mushir (who bustled up 2000 Guineas 5th Shifting Power in the Free Handicap), Musical Comedy for the Queen (who only just went down in a similar race at Ascot a few weeks back) & Rufford who ran a promising race behind Musical Comedy that day in 3rd.
