Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting Thursday 26th Sept 2013

Newmarket's 3 day Cambridgeshire Meeting begins tomorrow with a good looking 7 race card currently on good ground the star attraction on Day 1 had looked likely to be Paul Cole's Chesham Stakes winner Berkshire (see below) but luckily for me anyway he has been switched to Saturday's Royal Lodge when I will be there, I cannot wait to see this strapping son of Mount Nelson again, I was lucky enough to be at Newbury for the colt's promising debut run when he really took the eye in the paddock & it was no surprise to me that he went on to win at Royal Ascot.

The first race at Newmarket tomorrow is one of those big field backend 2 year old maidens that I love to watch as you never know what may be lurking in them, tomorrow's race has 2 incredibly well bred newcomers that standout a long way they are Lady Cecil's Touch The Sky (Sea The Stars x Love Divine) he is a half brother to Sixties Icon & is entered in next year's Derby, the other is Saeed Bin Suroor's Kings Land (New Approach x Kazzia) a half brother to Eastern Anthem, Kailani & Zeitopher surprisingly he is not entered in the Derby. The other newcomers with big race entries are Andrew Balding's Chinotto (Duke Of Marmalade x Muskoka Dawn) he is in The Racing Post Trophy & his stablemate Roskilly (Hurricane Run x Party Feet) is also a Derby entrant next year. Throw into the mix Rainbow Rock a half brother to Rainbow Peak / Celtic Heroine plus the obligatory Richard Hannon runner in Carthage & you have a very decent looking maiden that will throw up a few winners it might even produce a Derby prospect.

A tight looking 2yo nursery is next up but that is best left alone for me. The first of the stakes races comes next in the form of a Listed 1m4f fillies & mares event, always tough races at this time of year as some of the girls may just be going off the boil while others are just coming to themselves one who fits into the latter category is Phiz who arguably brings the best form to the table with a 2nd to The Lark in Doncaster's Park Hill Group 3 last time she should take all the beating with perhaps most to fear from Lady Cecil's pair of Songbird & Court Pastoral.
Newmarket's big race on Thursday is The Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes run over 7 furlongs for 2yo olds, Richard Hannon has won 3 out of the last 4 renewals & his representative tomorrow is Championship (see below) who returns to the track after 3 months after a shocking run at Royal Ascot, he had beaten Berkshire on his debut at Newbury previously
He is another who may have just needed time get over his debut success & was not ready for the pizazz of Royal Ascot, it will be interesting to see if he has grown & strengthened up in his time away from the course. Cable Bay, Brazos & Miracle Of Medinah all seem exposed in this grade to horses with more potential. Nezar steps up from a nursery win at Chester but on his form in a big sales race at York previously he has a lot to find. The 2 real exposed runners in the field are Silent Bullet (2 from 2) & God Willing (1 start 1 win), Silent Bullet easily won his maiden before scrambling home in a 3 runner race from Safety Check (runs in 14:35 tomorrow). God Willing won by a neck on his only start but he was always comfortable in that race & can only improve. The final runner is Brian Meehan's Mawfoor who was 3rd over an inadequate 6.5f at Donny in the big sales race last time it was much more like it after he too came unstuck in The Coventry but at least he finished ahead of Championship that day, he had also looked promising after a very good debut run which he followed up by also beating Safety Check albeit by a much bigger margin than Silent Bullet did he must have a chance tomorrow with the step up in trip looking to suit.

The last Stakes race on Newmarket's card tomorrow is a staying Listed event featuring last year's ready winner Caucus. This race has been won by 6 x 5yo olds & 3 x 4yo olds in the last 10 years so that rules out last year's winner Caucus who is hard to predict & the 3 year old Statutory who has lots to find. Cavaliero is a disappointing animal while Body Language & Saint Hilary are on the hunt for black type. Sabor A Triunfo is hard to assess having only had 1 start in this country, she was clearly rusty but didn't look entirely happy with our style of racing, she won a Group 1 over 1m2f on dirt at the Hippodromo d'Chile in march (see below, she's wearing white with a red hat), having just watched the race it looked as though the race fell in her lap as everything in front of her stopped while she just ran on past them despite the odd riding style of her jockey so in my eyes she didn't need to truly stay 1m2f she just did miles better than the opposition so it has to be doubtful that she'll stay 2 miles tomorrow which is backed up on her breeding as she's from a speedy family.
Genzy ran above himself in the Ebor when 2nd but was put in his place last time in France, Repeater ran his best race in ages on his first start for David O'Meara when travelling well before not finding much in The Doncaster Cup eventually finishing 3rd but there's guarantee he will back that effort up. O'Meara's other runner is much more straightforward & he will be much happier on tomorrow's forecast good ground, will he stay though? He has been 2nd over 1m6f & his out of a Shirley Heights mare so the extra 2 furlongs look to be within his compass especially given a slowly run race which I think tomorrow will be although on a more cautious note his full brother just about got 1 mile. Model Pupil completes the lineup for all his decent runs at staying level this season he looks just below the required class even if this is not the most classy of Listed races also his best form has come with cut. So on balance Tropical Beat looks the won for me.
Two tricky handicaps complete the card on Thursday. I am attending Newmarket on Friday & Saturday, I cannot wait the card on Friday looks fantastic with Radiator, Soft Falling Rain & Rizeena all running while Saturday's looks equally as good with the Cambridgeshire field to be finalised tomorrow plus The Cheveley Park & Sun Chariot. I will be tweeting pics & updates from the course both days when able so remember to give me a follow.
