Doncaster St Leger Festival: Day 2 Thursday 11th September 2014

Hello one & all, welcome along to my look at Day 2 of Doncaster's St Leger Festival or perhaps as it is better known Ladies Day on both the human & equine front. Yorkshire's finest lasses will be on show in the finery while the equine equivalent will be battling it on track in the day's 2 feature events The Sceptre & Park Hill Stakes.

Day 2 opens with an incredibly tough looking fillies Nursery over 6f which if i'm honest I would rather sit out then discuss or get involved with.

So the first race I will gaze my eyes over is one of the features the 7f Sceptre Stakes Group 3 named after the incredibly 19th century racemare who is still the only horse ever to win 4 of the 5 British Classics. No such fillies of her calibre in this field as yet but it appears to be a strong race for the grade.
Dutch Rose heads them after a recent 2nd in a small field conditions event last time, previous to that she had been well behind Bragging in a handicap when she gave the winner 8lbs (due to weight for age today she still gives the younger filly 4lbs). A decent filly in her own right she has yet to breakthrough at pattern level & its hard to see her breaking that duck in this.
Indignant has work to do once again with her conquerors from Goodwood on her last 2 starts at the Sussex venue.
J Wonder was ahead of Indignant 2 starts back when winning in Group 3 company for which she has a penalty to carry here, it was a return to form for this useful filly who had been unable to cope with the demands of Group 1 level competition earlier in the year, respected.

Al Thakira appears not to have trained on & it is a surprise to me that she is being persevered with. She is the size of a pony & has no room for any physical improvement so one would imagine her layoff was due to injury.
Amazing Maria has run flat on both her starts so far in what has been an interrupted season, the first of those can be forgiven as she was never going to stay the Oaks trip while her next start in France back down at a mile was disappointing especially on ground she is supposed to love, she dropped away tamely & can only be watched at present.
Bragging is a filly on a steep upward curve since a defeat on soft ground at Nottingham she has won 2 handicaps in comfortable style by nearly 7 lengths combined. She is fine stamp of a mare who is getting better with racing & appears to relish fast ground, one hopes that the drying weather continues so that by Thursday the ground is no worse than good, if it is then she is fancied to take this step up in grade in her stride.

Dancealot has nigh on 20lbs to find with the best of these & is readily passed over.
Evita Peron has shown useful form in her debut season but has also shown a penchant for soft ground & would be an unlikely runner if the rain stayed away.
Inyourdreams won a handicap over course & distance off 74 earlier in the year & has since been seen running ok in fillies sprint pattern races although last time she was well beaten, could outrun her odds. Joyeuse has had her limitations exposed this season & her owner has a much better prospect in Bragging. Kiyoshi is a quirky madame who should have won more than she has, she will appreciate the better ground here & has the class to get involved. Lucky Kristale is similar to Al Thakira in that she appears not to have trained on & on all known evidence this trip stretches her.
Muteela is another to have improved as the season has gone on, she looked every inch a Group performer after 3 quick wins culminating with a hard fought win in The Sandringham at The Royal Meeting but has since been 2nd twice at Goodwood in Group 3's firstly when just getting collared by J Wonder & then by her elders in The Supreme when she was readily disposed of by the no more than useful Irish gelding Ansgar. She showed mulish tendencies before the start that day which is a slight worry as she had previously looked a good honest filly.

Perfect Blessings is below what is required here even allowing for the step back up in trip looking set to suit here. Token Of Love is another improving filly in the lineup who after a couple of handicaps wins moved up into Listed company easily accounting for the disappointing dual 1000 Guineas 2nd Lightening Thunder, drop back to 7f is a concern for me here as she has looked as if the mile suits well & she can get behind in her races which will not help upped to this company.
Valonia has yet to show that she gets 7f & appears best at 6f the trip which she won her Listed race at Pontefract last time.

Bragging 100/30 Betfair is a filly on the upgrade who I have been really taken with so I am more than happy to row in again with her to complete the hat trick upped to pattern class with the ground having dried out.

The fillies St Leger follows which has been shared equally between 3 & 4yo's in the last 10 years, Dark Crusader from Tony Martin's Irish stable will appreciate the stiffer test here but has a big task ahead of her if recent form is anything to go by.
Debdebdeb goes in search of Black type for the first time in career & may just run above herself as she travels amongst these better fillies, she has plenty of ability but some attitude coupled with that.
Moment In Time was given its fair to say an average ride by Luis Saez in The American St Leger last time at Arlington Park, she ran on well to claim 4th near the finish & appears to have found her sparkle again so can be considered back against her own sex.
Seal Of Approval has unhappy memories of Town Moor after her horror fall last season in this race, she has looked out of sorts so far this year & even last time she dropped herself out never travelling or looking in love with the game early before staying on through beaten horses to snatch 3rd, has a chance if she can stay in contention.
Silk Sari is honest progressive who made the breakthrough at pattern level with a battling victory in Listed company at Newbury last time, she promises to stay well & should get involved.

Sohar is a useful handicapper who stays much further but has lots to find on official ratings. Venus De Milo appears to be thoroughly baffling Aidan O'Brien after starting her off at this trip she steadily dropped back to 12f then ran twice at 10f before getting well outpointed in the Yorkshire Oaks last time. This is an easier field than she has faced in her last 3 starts so if she is going to win again then its here.
Energia Fox (see pic below, Chestnut filly close 2nd in Grand Prix Diana Group 1) ran well on her English debut after a 5 month break since her last run in Brazil, she competed at the highest level in her native land finishing placed in the last 2 legs of the Brazilian Fillies Triple Crown; the last of those runs was under Ted Durcan when she was beaten just half a length in 3rd in Grande Premio Zelia Gonzaga Peixoto De Castro.

Arabian Comet has just failed on her last 2 starts in Group 3 company over this trip at Goodwood & back at 12f at York last time, if she can be ridden a little closer to the pace then she can gain a deserved win at pattern level.
Cascading ran a huge race in Listed company last time when just finishing behind Moment In Time & Silk Sari, she was interfered with up the straight but still kept on. Step up in trip should suit & you couldn't rule out more improvement.
Criteria, Groovejet & Island Remede are all of a similar level, all are vulnerable to any improvers in this field. Melrose Abbey is one of those improvers who bolted up last time out, she is a full sister to Listed winner Ceilidh House who also liked soft ground. Her half sister Villa Royale stays very well as does her half brother Bothy. So far her best form has come with plenty of cut so she must show that a faster surface suits.

Nothing I fancy strongly enough to want to back here.

2yo's have a chance at a big pot in the 6f sales race;
Al Gomry was well beaten in last place at Nottingham last time & has plenty to do here. His stablemate Burtonwood has been well beat at York on his last 2 starts & looks set to struggle again here. Heartbreak Hero has won his last 2 starts in the style of an upwardly mobile 2yo & needs respecting in this. Plymouth Sound caught a tartar last time at Bath after a comfortable debut success at Salisbury, inexperienced is a slight worry for a big field but this well made horse travels well & looks tactically astute to cope but he has to give weight away to some rivals who have similar potential.
I would hazard a guess that this was not the type of race that the Coolmore 'lads' expected The Great War to be running in come this point of the season but here he is after yet another defeat last time in a minor Listed event, he has work to do here but the stable did win this with a similar type in Reply a few years ago.
Gaudy ran well in a similar race at York last time when he finished 4th, needs more again this time.
Acaster Malbis finished 2nd on debut but then was almost last on his next start a couple of weeks later, big ask here. Stablemate Dougal has been well beaten on his last 2 starts & has work to do.
Grandad's World had been giving his trainer the right signals ahead of his debut as he was backed, quite a scopey son of Kodiac, he drew well clear to win an ordinary 5f maiden. Stable won this with the classy Wootton Bassett a few years ago & Grandad’s World may yet prove to be much better than the majority of those he receives weight from here despite his relative inexperience. Stablemate Intiwin has shown gradual improvement after running behind some of the North's better 2yo's this season, his penultimate start before his maiden win was good as well just in behind Saturday's impressive Listed winner Celestial Path. Looks well treated here & can get involved.
Kasb clearly appreciated the gelding operation when winning at Newmarket last time, drop back in trip is a concern here though.
Lexington Times stands head & shoulders above these on current figures after a good 3rd in The Solario 2 weekends ago although the big worry is the drop back to 6f which looks sure to catch him out. Natural Order is another who looks well treated carrying 8-12, he has not been seen since a 4th in The Superlative at Newmarket where he was just outstayed towards the end of the contest, dropping back should suit here & has chances. Gerry The Glover was not beaten all that far in a similar event at York on his last start when he ended up on the outside of the pack down the centre of the track which is habitually a disadvantage at York, type to go well at bigger odds.
Kibaar has maintained his form all season long & ran as well as ever behind the useful Felix Leiter at York last time, another with chances.
Vimy Ridge is another also ran from the earlier mentioned York sales race, he showed little that day & has work to do here. Yet another Fahey runner is the filly Diamond Creek who so far has shown that she has speed to burn & little stamina.
Fox Trotter was only beaten just over 5 lengths by the best 2yo we have seen so far this season in Ivawood at Goodwood & that was after his inexperience cost him as he missed the break at the start. Carrying just 8-6 here gives him a big chance & if he breaks on terms he could take all the beating. Mattmu didn't run at York due to the fast ground but when last seen was on the up, chances with no weight on his back.
Valley Of Fire was 3rd in the York sales race, like another of today's opponents Gerry The Glover he also raced down the outside in the centre of the track & further hindrance when he was interfered with towards the finish. Another with a big chance carrying 8-6. Bond's Girl is Richard Fahey's 7th runner in this race, she has not been seen since finishing a highly creditable 4th in The Weatherbys Super Sprint, pacey little filly whose speed will keep her involved but will most likely get swallowed up at the death. Cockney Island is a twice raced maiden who looks set to struggle taking on the boys here.

I have never had a bet in one of these sales races & that is not about to change here.

3yo's & their elders clash in the 1m2f handicap up next on the card,
Godolphin are responsible for the 2 at towards the head of the weights; Out Of Bounds won the conditions race on Day 1 at this meeting last year, his two runs in the UK this season have been less than inspiring & so far his best form has come in small fields.
Saxo Jack has been disappointing on his 2 starts back in this country after an excellent early campaign in Dubai, he is now only a pound above his last winning mark & if bouncing back is capable of getting involved. Sea Shanty appears to have had his string of wins for this season as his new mark looks to have him, for me he has also yet to prove he wants this distance. Elhaame finally got his head in front last time at Newmarket in a fairly uncompetitive race & he is far from guaranteed to repeat that feat here.
Kellini has failed to progress since arriving in England & faces another tall order here. Cosseted got caught up in the scrimmaging in a Newbury Listed race behind Silk Sari last time, she is best not judged too harshly on that performance & before that she had been on the upgrade, mark of 91 does not underpin her ability so she could easily play a part. Lyn Valley unsurprisingly ran a shocker last time after somehow finding the form to win at Goodwood on his previous start, capable but has to show the new mark has not got him. Angelic Upstart will like the extra furlong he gets to race at here, he has been steadily improving & has a chance here. Truth Or Dare has been well outclassed all season in minor pattern races & decent handicap's, his mark has dropped as a result but it will still need a quality performance to see him involved here.
The Corsican won well from a low mark in a decent Goodwood handicap last time, he needs more here but is a scopey sort who should be capable of more improvement.
Mange All managed to win at Ascot last time after pulling hard in the early stages, he will need to settle better here to get involved from his new mark.
Long Cross was an easy winner of an average maiden at Newmarket last time after showing abundant promise on his debut at Newbury earlier in the year, his 2 half sister's the year older Majestic Jasmine (Listed winner Germany) & a 2yo this year Majestic Manner (who won well the other day at Lingfield, watch out for her in the good autumn fillies races) are proof that the dam is more than capable of producing good class winners. Better ground should be no issue for him here & his opening mark looks well within his compass. Arab Dawn appeared not to stay at Royal Ascot last time or that his mark had him after an early season hat trick. He has been given plenty of time to develop further & is worth another chance from this mark.

Interesting handicap in which I have no doubt that Long Cross will be well found in the market but its another race that I will sit out.

The last race on the card like the first day is a tough looking low grade sprint handicap which I will be staying well away from.
