8 Dark Horses To Follow: Flat 2014

Hello & welcome to the first blog of the 2014 Flat season, the season of course officially started 2 weeks ago with Doncaster's Lincoln meeting but it stands alone in the first few weeks as the new season stutters into gear, this week finally has seen Flat racing start to take centre stage & truly bursts into action with Newbury's Spring Trials meeting this year ahead of The Craven Meeting due to the lateness of the Easter break. I adore this time of year as so many reputations go on the line & new ones are forged ahead of next months first Classics.

Before the season kicks into full flow I will put forward 8 Dark Horses to follow for the remainder of the year:
(They are in no particular order)

Big Orange (Michael Bell) 3yo B G Duke Of Marmalade x Miss Brown To You
Made his 3 year old debut earlier in the week when comfortably chasing home a ready John Gosden winner, he should get a reasonable mark in the high 70's to low 80's which should see him break his duck in a handicap next time. He is a big horse who will only improve all season & beyond.
(Won Lingfield Maiden 8/11f 29/04/2014 / 4th Queens Vase Royal Ascot)

Danehill Brook (David Wachman) 3yo B C Danehill Dancer x River Flow
Another to have had a run earlier in the week at Cork in a 4 runner race on ground softer than ideal giving a lot of weight away. Is highly rated on 95 so may well struggle in handicaps but was thought highly enough of to make his debut in the Group 3 Go And Go Round Tower Stakes so could easily win a minor Listed or Group race especially in Ireland where they are usually less competitive.
(Finished Last on 19/04/14)

Gothic (Sir Michael Stoute) 3 yo B C Danehill Dancer x Riberac
Long horse who hopefully will have done well over the winter & started to fill his frame. Ran a race full of promise on his debut before a comfortable win on his next start over 1 mile at Leicester.
Entered in the Dante & The Derby will most likely reappear in a race at Newmarket as he is in the Tattersalls Sales Race on Wednesday. On a slightly disappointing note he is appearing in the entries as being with an Unknown trainer which is odd as he was with Sir Michael Stoute last year. Hopefully that's just a typo.
(Finished 4th on seasonal debut on 25/04/2014, Unlucky 2nd at Goodwood 22/05/2014, 9th at Sandown 14/06/2014, 4th Sandown 05/07/2014. Won Leicester 11/4f 10/08/2014)

Intibaah (Brian Meehan) 4yo B G Elnadim x Mawaared
Useful 3 year old sprint handicapper last season who goes particularly well at Ascot having been placed in a Listed race before bolting up in a end of season handicap on soft last year. Entered in the Duke Of York which is encouraging, has the scope to improve as a 4 year old & is one for the big Ascot sprints this year.
(WON 5/2 10/05/2014)

Lahinch Classics (David Wachman) 3yo CH F Galileo x Lahinch
Made an eye catching debut finishing 3rd behind My Titania at Leopardstown last September travelling smoothly before tiring late on. Entered up in a maiden at Dundalk next Wednesday (WON 6/5F) & has numerous black type entries.
A certainty for a maiden before stepping up in Grade & she could easily be an outside bet for something like the Irish 1000 Guineas.
(2nd 7/1 Swettenham Stud Stakes Listed 16/05/2014, 2nd Kilboy Estates Stakes Group 2 20/07/2014, 6th Gowran Listed 13/08/2014)

Music Master (Henry Candy) 4yo B C Piccolo x Twilight
Won last year's Alex Scott Maiden & then ran a string of decent races over 7 furlongs always looking as though a drop in trip would be the making of him. Dropped in at the deep end in Ascot's Bengough Stakes Group 3, he was prominent & finished a honorable 2nd to a very much in form sprinter at the time (Tropics) with another year on his back to get stronger he will be a major player in all the top 6f races with a July Cup appealing most of all.
(Won Warwick 8/13f 24/04/2014 / 6th Windsor 06/06/2014 / 4th Diamond Jubilee Group 1 21/06/2014, WON Hackwood Group 3 3/1)

Mutakayyef (William Haggas) 3yo CH C Sea The Stars x Infallible
Gorgeous looking horse who is a tremendously impressive walker, ran an excellent race on debut on ground that he patently did not like. Well entered up in the Guineas, Dante, Derby & Irish Derby. His dam won a Nell Gwyn, was 2nd in the Coronation & the Falmouth.
A big strong horse who should easily stay 1m4f but may well find those races coming to soon in his life so will most likely will have the softly softly approach in minor Group company something like a King Edward or Tercentenary at Royal Ascot appeal.
Starts off in the first at Newbury tomorrow (1 mile maiden), (Finished a staying on 2nd looking like a step up to 1m2f would suit, 2nd 8/1 Newmarket Stakes Listed 03/05/2014 / WON Sandown Maiden 1/4f / 2nd Tercentenary Stakes Group 3 19/06/2014)

 What About Carlo (Eve Johnson-Houghton) 3yo B C Creachadoir x Boccatenara
Big strapping type who looked all quality last season, always well thought of from his small stable. Has one maiden win to his name an impressive Goodwood maiden win.
His next start was in a useful looking Conditions Stakes at Newbury when he was beaten due to the soft ground behind Pinzolo, Red Galileo & Pupil. Trips up to 1m2f should be well within his compass & looks the type to try minor Group company or conditions events at the start of his 3 year old career.
He will improve throughout the season & beyond.
(Won Esher Cup Handicap 16/1 25/04/2014 / Unplaced Haydock 24/05/2014 / Won 9/1 Epsom Derby Day 07/05/2014, 4th Newmarket Handicap 10/07/2014, Last Celebration Mile Group 2 23/08/2014)

I'm off to Newbury tomorrow where my main hope for the 2014 Flat season makes his seasonal & that is the gorgeous Berkshire who looks to have done very well over the winter courtesy of twitter updates which have reported him working very well recently (thanks to @whatcomberacing (Oliver Cole) & @paulcoleracing for the updates)
I fell in love with the horse on his racecourse debut at Newbury last season where his flashy markings helped him stand out but so did his feisty attitude & truly imperious walk.

He finished 3rd that day & I was on at huge prices when he won The Chesham comfortably at Royal Ascot. His next start came in The Royal Lodge when he won despite the ground & not quite handling the dip, I felt he won comfortably & he seems to have gone under the radar which is all the better for his followers.
He steps into a hot looking Greenham where he takes on the current Guineas favourite Kingman from the red hot John Gosden stable who have had 7 winners in 2 days. I fully expect Berkshire to win but will not be disappointed if he is beat due to the current form of the Gosden horses & tomorrow is not Berkshire's main aim, I truly believe he has the true star potential out of the two whatever happens in the Greenham a Guineas will suit him.
I fully expect the Derby distance to suit him later in the season as the further he goes the more settled he will become. Hopefully tomorrow will see Berkshire come to the forefront of the majorities thinking for the 2014 Classics & help propel his excellent trainer Paul Cole back into the big time.

The main betting event on Newbury's card tomorrow is the Spring Cup & I will take 2 against the field in the shape of So Beloved & Tinghir both are unexposed 4 year olds who should still be improving in what looks an excellent race.
So Beloved will appreciate the drying ground & has the assistance of crack apprentice Oisin Murphy from what looks a very workable mark. Tinghir's best form so far has been on soft but I see no reason why he should not handle slightly drier conditions & at his inflated odds he is an each way player.
