Saturday 14th September 2013: St Leger Day

I've been fairly quiet through Doncaster's St Leger meeting so far when it comes to blog writing but with the persistent rain I find it best to watch & see how bad the ground gets in truth it looks ok so far maintaining at good to soft throughout the week.
Those of you that follow me on Twitter @fttfracing will have hopefully followed me in with Breton Rock on Wednesday who I tweeted
With the rain falling Breton Rock must have a real chance in the 16:45 still at a decent e/w price in places
he duly obliged in cosy style at a generous 12/1 who looks capable of winning again. Apart from him I have had one other bet that was Proud Chieftain on Thursday he was very unlucky constantly being denied a clear run & maybe he can gain compensation in the Cambridgeshire in a few weeks time which should suit this classy animal.
So in reality I have not fancied much through the week so I find it best to watch rather than get involved when that happens.

Tomorrow how ever is a different story I have already discussed The St Leger in great depth in a former blog entitled St Leger - Do Godolphin hold the key? please check it out if you have not already read it. As the weather has stayed the same & with the ground riding good to soft I am genuinely confident about Cap O'Rushes who is still available at 20/1 with the sponsors Ladbrokes & I will also be backing Godolphin for the exacta / trifecta.

Doncaster's opening race The Attheraces Champagne Stakes has lost some of its luster now my current favourite racehorse Berkshire is a N/R but I understand the decision. Still its a very decent race without him in which I believe The Boys in Blue can get off to a flyer with Outsrip who was only just caught by an inspired Richard Hughes on Toomore at Goodwood last time out, he should appreciate the juice in the ground & can win before he steps into Group 1 company. He has most to fear from The Grey Gatsby who was caught out by the the lively ground, his lack of experience & an excellent James Doyle ride on returning rival Treaty Of Paris.

The Ladbrokes Portland Handicap is next up & what a great sprint handicap it is; 5 year olds have won the last six renewals with the last five out of the last four being split between two trainers David Marnane & David Barron. Only one of those trainers is represented tomorrow with David Barron fielding Wednesday's also ran Magical Macey, he was outclassed & in need of the run so a better run would not be a shock tomorrow.
Representing the age group that have dominated this event in recent years are Steps; improving sprinter from a yard on fire must have a great chance, Elusivity; represents last years winning stable ground will help & has been running into form so has an E/W chance, El Viento; won well latest up 7 lbs for that so looks likely to struggle & Barnet Fair; seems better on firm ground so is up against it.
Last year's winner Doc Hay returns as well he has been out of form most of the season but is bound to have been primed for a repeat bid & the signs were more encouraging last time.
Doctor Parkes (pictured above) is one I will throw in as I have been following him for a little while his run at Chester latest was unfortunate as he was caught on heels & would have finished closer, the doubt of course is the ground as he has never won on worse than good but all his attempts on softer conditions have been at Chester from bad draws. On breeding he really should be suited by softer going as well over half of his sires progeny (Diktat) excel on softer going & his dam has produced horses that cope with softer ground so at his price I won't let him go unbacked from his excellent draw.
Bogart is too high in the handicap as is Definightly who's return in April was average he has been off since so its concerning for him from top weight even allowing for the ground suiting him. Confessional had everything in his favour last week but that won't happen tomorrow, Ajjaadd is a banker for the frame after a consistent season, he goes on the ground I just know very little about his jockey otherwise I would back him. Our Jonathan did me a favour when winning the Ayr Gold Cup a few years ago but has been very hit & miss since changing trainers like the weather at his very best he would carry this lot but I want to see a spark first. Burwaaz was my pick for The Stewards Cup last time & ran a mighty race all on his own, I was disappointed he was used as a pacemaker last time & that gives me doubts about him tomorrow.
My two against the field are Doctor Parkes & Elusivity (pictured below).

If Aljamaheer is back to his best then The OLBG Park Stakes is his for the taking verging on Group 1 class he is a cut above his rivals who regularly turn up in these 7 furlong races & beat each other.

The Ladrokes St Leger follows & I'm all over Cap O'Rushes as I've already said earlier. The last three races at Donny are all decent but non betting events for me I will however have one eye on Saptapadi & Greatwood (who returns after being gelded) also What About Carlo looks a nice type in the nursery.

The other feature meeting on Saturday is over at The Curragh which features two Group races the highlight is for fillies & mares run at 15:35 Lanwades Stud Blandford Stakes Group 2, I have to say I am a massive fan of Alive Alive Oh (pictured below)
she has been missing for a while now due to the ground & I'm guessing that connections would prefer more juice for tomorrow however just on her win in a Listed race at Navan back in May she created a huge impression on me quickening clear to win emphatically the form has not worked out but I can't hold that against her my one doubt for tomorrow is that she may just need it against race fit rivals but I will still take her to win before going on to the race I think is ideal for her The Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe. Her rivals include Hot Snap who will be tough to beat after a great run in the Nassau last time & the perennial bridesmaid Shirocco Star.
